Milwaukee's 41st annual Juneteenth Day celebration is going down TODAY with live music, food, and Miss Juneteenth Day appearances!
If you're from Milwaukee, you know the celebration kicks off with a parade that starts at 19th & Atkinson. I surely remember the parade from WAAAAAY back in the day coming down my block of 24th & CENTER Street and the "floats" (that are really just cars of people) throwing candy at us kids, so they have definitely RE-ROUTED! I went to the Juneteenth parade last year and they still shoot candy at the neighborhood kids.
Opening ceremonies are at 12 noon TODAY at King Drive and Locust St., and the party goes on until 6:00p.m. I will not be getting there until 5PM especially since Juneteenth seems to be the meeting place for thugs with pitbulls, but methinks I can spend my lunch at the opening ceremony to snap a picture or two!
Juneteenth Day, officially celebrated as a state holiday since 2010, marks the day in 1865 when word reached slaves in Texas that the Civil War had ended and our great city of Milwaukee has one of the largest Juneteenth celebrations in the country. That is something to truly celebrate!! The event is organized by good old Northcott Neighborhood House.
Hope to see you there!
